Hi, my name is Bill. I am a 35-year-old man with physical challenges in my life. My mother, Joan, chose EHCA to best care for my needs.
I was diagnosed with Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome, a condition characterized by the overproduction and accumulation of uric acid, a waste product of normal chemical processes which is found in blood and urine. This overproduction of uric acid can cause gouty arthritis (arthritis caused by an accumulation of uric acid in the joints), kidney stones, and bladder stones. People with Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome usually cannot walk, require assistance sitting, and are generally wheelchair-bound. Problems with the nervous system and behavioral disturbances are also characteristic of this disorder. Abnormal involuntary muscle movements, such as flexing, jerking, and flailing are often displayed by people affected with this disorder. Self-injury, including biting and head banging, is the most common and distinctive behavioral problem in those with Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome.
I am currently living at EHCA's Cumberland Road Group Home. I have lived there for 18 years, since 1981. I also participate in EHCA’s MOVE Program. This is where I get involved in community acitivities and volunteer at many different organizations. I am a very social person with a good sense of humor. I like to stay active and updated in today’s emerging technology.
Every week I will be sharing the inside scoop of what happens at EHCA. I will let you in on my perceptions of EHCA. You know, what life is like here, what I think, what I know, and what I do. I may talk about one topic, or maybe several topics. I hope you'll follow my blog and look forward to taking you on many adventures.
Take Care, Bill
